Billie Joe Armstrong Pays Tribute To Adam Schlesinger Covering ‘That Thing You Do’

The Green Day Frontman Covered The Song As Part Of His “No Fun Mondays” Series

April 21, 2020

Billie Joe Armstrong continued covering songs as part of his “No Fun Mondays” quarantine series, this time paying tribute to a musician that passed away this month. Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, who died due to COVID-19 complications, not only had a successful career thanks to his hit song ‘Stacy’s Mom,’ but also had a career making music for movies as well. In tribute to the late Schlesinger, the Green Day frontman covered the title track he wrote for the movie, ‘That Thing You Do.’

With three cover songs in the series already under his belt, this week’s edition featured Armstrong covering the song by the fictional sixties band ‘The Wonders.’ Adam Schlesinger wrote the song for the film directed by Tom Hanks and the song was nominated for an Oscar as well. The Green Day front man puts his own spin on the song, giving it a 21st century update.

The actors who portrayed The Wonders reunited themselves last week to perform the song for charity. Armstrong has kept busy as well taking part in Global Citizens’ ‘One World: Together at Home’ TV special, performing ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends.’ While many are upset to be stuck at home, at least we have Billie Joe Armstrong continuing to churn out cover songs.
