Footage From The Greatest Nirvana Reunion/All Star Gig May Finally Be Released

July 5, 2018

When Nirvana was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, former members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear were joined onstage by Lorde, St. Vincent, Joan Jett, and Kim Gordon to play classic Nirvana hits for the first time in years.

Inspired by the reunion/All Star gig, the crew, along with Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Deer Tick's John McCauley made their way to a tiny Brooklyn bar to keep the train rolling.  All in all, this collaboration of legends and current stars played 19 Nirvana songs, and luckily, Grohl had the foresight to film the entire thing.  Grohl told the Rolling Stone, "When we realized that we were going to do it, I just called the people from my production company and said, 'We need to film this,' and we loaded some cameras in there and and shot it without knowing what would ever come of it.

For years, that footage has remained unreleaed, much to Grohl's chagrin.  "But it would be a shame for that evening to be only a memory and and we’ve got it. And it was f*****g great. It was cathartic and everybody involved, I think, understood that they were part of something like a dream."  Well if Grohl has his way, someday the professional footage will see the light of day.  In the meantime, we have this fan-shot footage of All Star Nirvana performing "Smells Like Teen Spirit," accimpanied by Joan Jett on guitar and vocals.

Grohl recalled the night, "I remember playing and looking and seeing [Sleater-Kinney's] Carrie Brownstein in the front row in the pit singing along to every song and, you know, getting to play drums behind Joan Jett or, god, playing “School” or f*****g “Pennyroyal Tea” with J Mascis.  It really was amazing. It was something else.  Someday, I'm sure everybody'll see it."
